According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is in Detroit gaging the interest of various automotive companies in their self-driving car system which they have been developing since 2010. Google claims they have already driven over 200,000 miles using the system in tests.
Google states that they still need to do millions of miles of tests before the product is ready to hit the market. The company is discussing the system and various ways in which it could be integrated into vehicles built by various manufacturers. They are also discussing what it would take to cover such a vehicle with various insurance agencies.
Options being considered for rolling the system out to consumers include partnering with auto companies to build it into the vehicles during production, offering the system as an after market upgrade, or even giving away upgrades for free as a vehicle to promote use of other Google services.
