Facebook creates organ donor status

Facebook organ donor

Facebook has created the organ donor status in a move to get member's of the social network to engage in the donation of organs to ease waiting lines for transplants. Starting this Tuesday (May 1st), users on the social network can start adding organ-donor status to their profiles.

The organ-donor status appears on your profile just like your hometown and workplace information. There is also a link to the official donor registry to verify the donor status. Over 114,000 people in the United States and millions worldwide await today for life-saving hearts, kidneys and livers, Facebook said.

An average of 18 people die everyday waiting for transplants. "Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis, by simply telling people that you’re an organ donor, the power of sharing and connection can play an important role," said Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Together with the new organ donor status, Facebook unveiled the option of adding health & wellness information to your timeline, so you can add information such as weight loss, broken bones, past diseases and obviously, if you're an organ donor.
