At a joint event today in Palo Alto, California, Google and Sony introduced a previously unheard of Google TV set top box. The event was meant to discuss the nature and future of the platform. Unfortunately, there were no big software details revealed.
The prototype device shown above was the biggest news from the event. Any word on technical specs of the device were absent from the discussion. We also don't have much information as far as pricing and release dates are concerned.
Since we don't know much about what comes inside the actual box itself, most of the information we can glean from the reveal is interesting design of the remote. It is double sided with a full QWERTY keyboard on one side with other TV related keys and a trackpad on the opposite side.
With LG taking the full TV set integration route, this is the first second generation, self contained Google TV device we have seen. This could be the perfect solution for those looking for an upgraded Google TV device without the large investment of an entirely new TV.
All we know is that the device will be coming some time this summer. Most speculation points to more information being revealed this year at Google I/O. The full Hangout from the event is available on the official Google TV YouTube page. The two videos below give a close up view of both the new box and accompanying remote.
