The tablet market continues to grow, and Apple continues to lead it. According to data from NPD DisplaySearch, tablet shipments grew 124 percent in the first quarter, with Apple being responsible for 62.8 percent of all the tablet units shipped in the period.
A total of 13.6 million iPads were shipped in the first quarter, with a little help coming from the release of the third generation iPad in March, which saw early high numbers. The nearest competitor is Samsung with 1.6 million units and 7.5 percent of the market.
Coming in at third, Amazon's Kindle Fire shipped 900,000 units accounting for a share of 4 percent, while Amazon is traditionally silent about shipments of its products, the Kindle Fire, which had an extremely good reception in October 2011, seems to be slowing down as Samsung has passed it by.
