No one really expected it. From what it looks like, Apple is considering the creation of pens for iOS devices. The Cupertino-based company has filed an application with The United States Patent & Trademark Office for an optical stylus patent.
It could be something that will never get out of the paper (it wouldn't if Steve Jobs was still around), but if it does, the concept Apple is applying to this stylus is slightly different from what we already get from most smartphones and tablets today.
Different because the pen will be equipped with optical pressure sensors which will determine in which surface the pen is in contact it (probably because they want to make it iDevice universal) and it will also come with an integrated camera so you can capture pictures using a pen.
As we have already noted multiple times when talking about patent fillings, the application for a patent does not mean the project will come alive, but it's usually a good indication of what is about to come. Could the next iPhone or iPad have a stylus pen as an accessory?
