Google has offered 3D imaging inside of Google Earth for some time now. During today's Google Maps event, Google unveiled the next big advancement they plan to make in respect to 3D imaging in Google Earth both on PCs and Android devices.
The demo below shows the results of Google's new 3D imaging methods which use aircraft equipped with special Google hardware to build a complete 3D map of the terrain below. This differs from the current technique which results in a patchwork appearance with 3D structures mixed in.
The changes will be rolling out soon as Google is in the process of gathering new 3D imagery all the time. The demo below was given on an iPad. At the event, Google announced that the new 3D capabilities will be coming to both iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
