Foursquare has been teasing their upcoming smartphone app refresh for some time now. This morning they released version 5.0 of their location based check-in app on both Android and iOS. The new version of Foursquare brings both a sweeping graphical refresh and a few new features.
As you can see above, both the Android and iOS versions are fairly similar after the redesign. Both feature a 3 column interface with a specific focus on improving the overall visual styling of the application. Everything is far designed to attract your eye and keep you engaged in the application after checking in.
The text list of friend's check-ins has been replaced by a picture heavy time line view. It is now far easier to view your account information, trophies, photos, and other statistics with the "Me" column bringing it all together in one location.
The "Explore" column has also received a massive upgrade to help users become more aware of what is around them. The recommended "Specials" change with the time of day, breakfast recommendations in the morning, a place to grab a drink at night, and recommendations of places that your friends have previously visited.
