It’s fair to say that one of the biggest and fastest growing aspects of the internet is Social Media sites and their apps. They allow us to communicate with people all over the world, contact people we’ve been out of touch with and generally be social. One of the most interesting things about it is just how flexible these sites are becoming as companies adapt the idea and try to be unique.
One of the things you’ll find most people do and can relate with on things like Twitter is watch television and movies, it’s something very easy to relate to people with and opens up plenty of discussion. It was only a matter of time before social media sites started to appear that were based solely for this type of entertainment. One of the most fun is GetGlue and with the unique aspect of collecting stickers that can actually be sent to you, that just adds to the level of unique.
Watching Television Together

You don’t collect stickers for everything you do on the GetGlue app but the idea is that when you are watching a show you check in the fact in the app, this is not only while watching television of course but it can be used when you go see a movie at a cinema, this can often lead to stickers for opening weekend events. The social aspect is that you find other people who are watching the shows, or taking a part in the events at the same time, which leads to the other features of the app.
Features
When checking in that you are watching the show or movie, or taking part in an activity and you find others that are doing the same thing, you can actually comment on it, like that these people are watching too and like their comments. Of course this does have a downside sometimes if people have already seen the show and have commented with potential spoilers. This is a negative side of not only the app itself but also the web based version in that other users sometimes do enjoy to discuss these events and what has happened. If anything it would be nice to have some protection against these spoilers, but that would be hard to build in.

One of the most fun features though which is not really a feature of the app itself but separate is the stickers themselves. This is in fact where the “GetGlue” name comes from. When you collect enough of these stickers it’s actually possible to order them through the app (or website) and they will be sent to you. This is not dependant on the country you are in either, so for example if you are in the United Kingdom you can still order the stickers and they will arrive and free of charge.
Brand Support

As with other social media sites the companies that want to market their brands take notice and look to use it to their advantage. This is arguably why GetGlue is fun, the brand promotions are not intrusive to your enjoyment of the app but as you check in that you watch shows you will get official stickers for the shows, such as the WWE wrestling show which weekly promotes their Raw show with stickers. Other shows also do the same on nights when new episodes are premiering, it’s quite fun to collect all available stickers for your favourite shows and arguably something that will keep you checking in.
Verdict

GetGlue as an app and website is something that has little productive value but is just plain fun. The interface changes that have taken place over the last few months have also improved the experience of using the app and of course the stickers themselves are just an added bonus. As social media sites adapt and evolve to become different it’s nice to see that some like GetGlue remember to keep things fun, and some of the other bigger names like Facebook should take notice of that fact too. Get Glue can be downloaded for free for Android phones from Google Play.
