The first experience many gamers had with Deadly Premonition was a fairly strained one, until the game was given some time to impress. With a clunky control system and graphics that were closer to Playstation 2 levels rather than Xbox 360 it should have really been a game that was quickly forgotten as a failure, but this was not to happen with Deadly Premonition.
With a storyline and style that made many reminiscent of Twin Peaks the game became somewhat of a cult hit with its poor interface and bad design just adding to that weird and wonderful feel that turned out to be unique to some, and an underground hit was born. If you preserved with it, you were pulled into a mess of a game, but one that really did catch imagination. For others though the failings were too noticeable and it was quickly forgotten about. Now it’s time for Playstation 3 to get Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut, a game that looks to not only add to the story but to also try improve the controls as well as other issues like with the camera. Will it be able to create the same magic again or will an updated Deadly Premonition be more of a wounding for the games popularity when some clearly enjoyed the very things that weakened it in the first place?
A Story Driven Experience
The thing that makes Deadly Premonition is in fact the story on which it is based. This is a Twin Peaks style story but with Asian horror elements that are shoved together to create something that feels familiar but also odd at the same time. Enemies lumber towards you walking backwards, their arms outstretched as their shadowy eyes fall upon you, but now with an updated control system they are easier to despatch off, this is also helped (or hindered for some) by an easier game settings. Upscaled graphics bring them up to 720p but based on current generation standards the graphics are still bad. Luckily for Deadly Premonition this does fit the horror style that it’s trying to create, so at least this has stayed intact.
With an improved control system there are also new features for the Playstation 3, these include the ability to use the Move controller and also play the game in 3D. The 3D option is arguably something to be ignored though, it just manages to show the weakness of the graphics and poor textures that really don’t fit into the quality required for a decent level of 3D. With the Move controller, for some parts of the game it does work, but driving is near impossible. Anybody who has experienced the driving in the original probably won’t look forward to that part of the game anyway, as it stays the same.
The Lack of Director’s Cut Content
The truth is with the Director’s Cut that this is more of a re-release on a console that has not had the luck to host this game yet (outside of Japan at least). For people who have not yet experienced the charms of Deadly Premonition and want to experience a Twin Peaks style world in true insane glory, then this is perfect chance. For people who already own the game though, they won’t find much new, so be aware of this.
Recommending Deadly Premonition is a complex thing, because on one side we have to accept that this is a poor game in quality, just the graphics show this. When it comes to storyline though there are few that reach the level of cult status that Deadly Premonition has achieved. If there were ever a game that fit the saying "So bad it's good" then this may be it, but the truth is Deadly Premonition in Director's Cut form or regular gains fans for story, rather than gameplay.
