Sony PS Vita is going to be the best portable gaming console by date. It’s amazing to see how Sony has fit so many features in a small package. It is completed handheld package giving and ultimate gaming experience.
Sony Vita was released in Japan in December last year. Now it is going to get releasing in rest of the world today. Vita is priced at $249 for Wi-Fi version. For a 3G version, you have to pay 50 bucks more. There are also reports that PS Vita prices many fall after release as PS3 160 GB is available at $250. But, Vita is portable and PS3 is not.
PS Vita has got a pure outstanding design. It is clearly distinct from PSP, as it is bigger, thicker and has a more fancy design. Vita features 5-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen with a resolution of 960 X 544 pixels. The screen is however not in a competition with retina displays, but sharpness is good and graphics are just amazing.
At the left side of screen are directional buttons, home button and left analog joystick; and to right are four action keys, right analog joystick and Start & Select buttons. On the top are two shoulder buttons – L & R, Vita card slot, volume keys and power button. And, at the bottom of Vita are headphone jack, memory card slot, microphone and USB port for data transfer. At the outer side of both thumbsticks are speakers at each side.
Vita is quite handy and suits fine in hand. And, it isn’t much heavy. Also at the rear of Vita are two touchpads.
PROCESSOR, MEMORY AND CONNECTIVITY
Vita has a pretty nice hardware specs suited for gaming. It sports quad-core Cortex A9 ARM processor. Graphics are powered with SGX543MP4+ GPU. PS Vita has 512 MB of main RAM and 128 MB of VRAM. Sony Vita memory cards will be available in sizes ranging from 4 GB to 32 GB.
Vita is available in two models – one with Wi-Fi and another with 3G. GPS feature is also available in 3G version. Sony Vita also features Bluetooth v2.1 with EDR.
UI is straight forward. When you start Vita, you are prompted to add your PlayStation Network (PSN) account. The interface is rather inspired by smartphone operating systems (Android/iOS) than PSP. It comes preloaded with both important and additional apps. The web browser cannot match smartphone speeds, but is above-level for a gaming console.
Sony has announced to add social networking apps to Vita including Skype, Facebook and Twitter. Google is going to launch Maps app for 3G version of Vita. Vita also has a chat app that can support up to 6 people in a single group chat. Users can set up profile and add friends.
Music player plays MP3 and WAV audio files. Video player plays MP4 videos up to 720p resolution very smoothly.
This is the most important part of PS Vita. With quad-core processor and hardcore GPU, games have same quality as found on PS3. Vita is also backward compatible with most of PSP games. At the moment of launch time, there are only a dozen or two, games on Vita platform; but Sony has promised to brings as many games to Vita as on PSP. Then there are no worries, we will keep getting more and more games regularly. Few games available currently on Vita are FIFA Soccer, Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, Golden Abyss and Wipeout2048.
Playing games on Vita and comparing it to PS3, there is no major difference in performance. Just Vita is handy & portable. The real joy of PS Vita is in playing 3D games and not 2D.
Camera and Battery
PS Vita has two camera – rear and front facing, both with VGA resolution of 640 X 480 pixels. The camera quality is not much better than PSP, even PSP has better picture quality than PS Vita. So, Vita is not meant for shooting pictures.
Battery Life is also not great at all. PS Vita gives a battery life of 3-5 hours on playing games. It can play music for up to 9 hours, if screen is off.
PS Vita is not just the best handheld gaming device, beating Nintendo 3DS, it offers many more things than keep 3DS a lot behind it. We can use Vita as a media device, for GPS navigation, web browsing and even for social networking. It has a beautiful display and easy controls. There isn’t much to say about it as we have already said that Vita is the best handheld gaming console by date. Nintendo 3DS and PSP have no competition with Vita. And moreover, the $250 start-up price is very reasonable.
