How-To Handle More Than One Account on Twitter

When using Twitter, especially for marketing it’s always useful to handle more than one account.  In fact some people can find they are handling anywhere from one to ten accounts at a time based on how many websites they are working on.

When using Twitter names to increase the visibility of updates on websites for SEO purposes for example it’s normal to have a Twitter account for each website.  While doing this you have to be able to handle all questions coming to the accounts so this has to be organised in a way that it is easy to handle.

Handling More Than One Account

One of the easiest ways to handle this is to use a Twitter client so that you can view all the accounts at the same time.  For this how-to I’m going to use TweetDeck as it’s very powerful and created for this use.  Although the latest version is not as good as previous ones it still manages to allow the user to use as many names as they require.

When TweetDeck is installed the first thing is to add the accounts that you are going to use.  This is done by clicking the cog icon on the top right of the application and then Application Settings.  Then clicking on Accounts you can then add each Twitter account (and also Facebook if you wish to do that).  This will give the TweetDeck application access to each account.  By then leaving the Application Settings and clicking on Add Column on the top right of the Application you can then add a column for each of the Accounts.

When adding a column just add the timeline for each account, you will notice that there is already a “@ Me” column created.  What this column shows is actually all mentions of all accounts that have been added.  This means that you do not have to add a mention column for every account you are going to use.  The same goes for direct messages.  These are new additions to the TweetDeck functionality as before you needed to have a mention (@ me) column for each name, and same for messages.

Handling all the Information in the Streams

The most complicated part of handling Twitter this way is information overload.  Personally I don’t find a problem with this but it can be quite daunting when you see all the Twitter accounts and their tweet streams all on the same screen.  Given time you will get used to it though and find that you can tweet from all of your names individually with no problems. 

One thing to also be aware of is how to tweet from each account, or more than one account.  This can be done by clicking on the Tweet button the blue button that you will see on the top left of the application and then selecting which account(s) to tweet from.

Make Twitter Work for You

The most important thing about functionality like this is that it is provided free and adds a lot to not only your experience when using Twitter, but also what you can do when marketing your sites.  Twitter is a popular way right now to improve your user hits and having more than one account for your site can really help with this.  Also don’t forget that you use your personal Twitter account in this way, but just remember which one you are sending Tweets to and who your audience are.
