When creating an SEO strategy for your website one of the important things to do is link building. Due to recent changes like Google’s Penguin update the rules around link building have become stricter to crackdown on websites that Google see as spam sites, and ones which should not have such a high rating.
This has led to many sites seeing their page ranks being affected even if they are not actually spam sites. The important thing with link building is to build them effectively and try to fit within the rules. Of course it’s important to drive traffic towards your site but if you fall into what Google see as a spam site this will affect your score with them, something that of course you don’t want
Some Link Building Tips

We live in a social age, even on the internet. I’ve said in many articles about SEO that you should take advantage of social media and I stick by that. Build your fan base online and make your links interesting to your site and they will share your pages and get more people reading them. This will increase the number of links you create and get people interested.
Don’t forget to use internal links. Take your time to build those links between your articles that are connected to each other and you’ll find that the page rank will rise, because you are doing link building right. In turn this will make people visit more of your pages as well as the search engine robots that are looking over your pages; it will give them a path to follow.

Some sites rush out articles that are low quality in the hope that more pages mean more of an impact, because in theory they have more links right? Wrong. Google looks at the quality of the articles too. Also don’t assume all backlinks to your site are good, Google will penalise you for backlinks to low quality sites so it’s important to know who is linking to you and just how relevant they are to your business.
Of course one of the most important things is why would people want to link to your site? Why would they want to post your article on their Facebook or on Twitter for their followers to read? You have to make it interesting for them, it has to have a context that they want to read about and provide interesting information. The more interest you get the more chance of being linked to.

The important thing about any SEO, especially back linking is to make sure it fits within the rules. Don’t take any shortcuts that will come back to bite you in the future, especially when Google constantly change the rules. Good SEO will reap the rewards when you put the time into it, bad SEO will just destroy all your hard work and make you start form the very beginning. It’s not a hard choice to make really.
